WHERE WE STAND

Artist:
Camal Pirbhai and Camille Turner
Date:
May 16, 2019 to June 29, 2019

Join us for the opening reception, Thursday, May 16 from 7 – 9 pm.  Artists will be in attendance.

The past, present and future collide in the collaborative work of Camal Pirbhai and Camille Turner, where suppressed histories of transatlantic slavery in Canada are unearthed to be reconsidered in a new light.  The complete WANTED series, 10 large-scale photographs that respond to runaway advertisements posted by Canadian slave owners in late 18th century Canadian newspapers will occupy the gallery walls.  The photographs transform the descriptive texts of humans as property into contemporary fashion ads presenting a fresh and empowered lens in which to look back and ahead.  These powerful images will accompany the video installation, Family Matters, a work that also traverses time, inspired by an enslaved mother and son who were offered for sale in an 1806 Upper Canada Gazette advertisement.
